The Continuing Journey

I have been out of school for a little while now.  I completed my Bachelor of Applied Technology in GIS with Honours at SAIT in 2023.  Work has kept me busy and working hard to continually develop new skills, most of these have revolved around Python, PowerBI, Spotfire and similar technologies.  While I don't work in a direct GIS role, spatial data is all pervasive and having a strong grasp on what it is, and how it can be used is always useful.

Having completed school, it can sometimes be easy to let learning slide, especially given the demands of a social life and work.  I have found I return to a few places to give me the ability to continue to learn and to help keep tools I don't use professionally, more or less fresh in my mind.

The main places I use to continue to learn are Youtube, Linkedin, ESRI and Medium.  Although not all of these offer courses directly, they do at the least offer the ability to learn about courses and other content.

Linkedin

If you have access to their learning platform it has a plethora of classes to take and learn from. I do not have access to the learning portion but I follow many people within the geospatial space which allows me to see excellent content posted. The two that post the most within the context of learning are Dr. Milan Janosov and Dr. Qiusheng Wu.  Most of the content is posted off of Linked In, but it remains a good location to see when new content is posted on other platforms.

Youtube

Youtube has long been an excellent source of learning for free.  Both Dr. Janosov and Dr. Wu post content about learning with Dr. Wu offering full lectures for courses he teaches through the University of Tennessee Kentucky.  Beyond these two there are excellent tutorials on using QGIS, such as the excellent series by Matt Forest. Finally within the ESRI sphere we have John Nelson posting video tutorial walkthroughs on using ArcGIS Pro to create beautiful maps.

ESRI

ESRI provides several Massive Open Online Courses throughout the year.  These provide students with the ability to do hands on labs with ESRI software (Especially AGOL) and learn or reinforce some basic geospatial concepts.

Medium

This is the first year I have tried Medium, that is the first year I have had a subscription.  It is a platform that allows people to post articles on a wide variety of topics.  These include datascience and geospatial topics.  So far I have found its primary use is to learn about new tricks are package libraries for Python.
